Thompson sets up chance of rare brother-sister double Posted: 20 Jul 2013 07:12 PM PDT (Reuters) - Nicholas Thompson carded a second consecutive 65 to push into a tie for the lead after the third round of the Sanderson Farms Championship at Annandale Golf Club on Saturday, setting up a potential rare family double. The 30-year-old's seven-under round left him tied with in-form Daniel Summerhays and two shots clear of the chasing pack, while his teenage sister Lexi was tied third and three shots off the lead after three rounds at the LPGA tour's Marathon Classic. Only two brother-sister combinations have ever won on the elite tours and none have managed the feat in the same week. ...

Golf-Matsuyama in first Open slow play penalty since 2004 Posted: 20 Jul 2013 02:12 PM PDT (Wraps penalties, adds quotes) By Tony Jimenez GULLANE, Scotland, July 20 (Reuters) - Japan's Hideki Matsuyama was the unlucky recipient of the British Open's first slow-play penalty for nine years during the third round at Muirfield on Saturday. Almost out of the blue, slow play suddenly became a hot topic as the Royal & Ancient (R&A) organisers decided to clamp down on an issue that has blighted the game in recent decades. Scotland's Martin Laird was also handed a one-stroke penalty for handling the ball in the rough at the par-five 17th. ...

Golf-Woods banking on major experience Posted: 20 Jul 2013 12:37 PM PDT By Ed Osmond GULLANE, Scotland, July 20 (Reuters) - Tiger Woods will rely on his experience of winning major titles when he bids for number 15 in the final round of the British Open on Sunday. The 37-year-old American starts out two shots behind Briton Lee Westwood, his playing partner in the third round who is seeking to end a long wait for a first major. "I'm pleased where I'm at," Woods told reporters after shooting a one-over-par 72 for a one-under aggregate of 212. "I'm only two back. There's only one guy ahead of me. I've got 14 of these things and I know what it takes to win it. ...

Golf-Mahan not seeking redemption for Ryder Cup agony Posted: 20 Jul 2013 11:17 AM PDT By Ed Osmond GULLANE, Scotland, July 20 (Reuters) - American Hunter Mahan is not seeking redemption after moving to within touching distance of leader Lee Westwood with a superb third-round 68 at the British Open on Saturday. Mahan lost a Ryder Cup singles match to Graeme McDowell at Celtic Manor in 2010 when he duffed a chip shot to the 17th green and conceded a victory which handed the trophy to Europe. "I don't need any redemption or anything like that, just playing golf," the 31-year-old told reporters after finishing two behind Westwood on 212, one under. ...

Golf-We were playing badly, not slowly, says unhappy McDowell Posted: 20 Jul 2013 09:32 AM PDT By Ed Osmond GULLANE, Scotland, July 20 (Reuters) - World number seven Graeme McDowell found plenty to complain about after struggling to a scrappy 73 in the third round of the British Open on Saturday. The Northern Irishman was annoyed to be put on the clock with his French playing partner Gregory Bourdy early in the round and he also said he did not think the bunkers around Muirfield were totally fair. "They told us on the fourth tee that we were two and a half minutes behind schedule," McDowell told reporters. "All right. Fine, we got off to a slow start. We were cutting it very close. ...

Golf-Muirfield watering has avoided real disaster - Sterne Posted: 20 Jul 2013 07:12 AM PDT By Tony Jimenez GULLANE, Scotland, July 20 (Reuters) - The Royal & Ancient (R&A) avoided a "real disaster" by watering the Muirfield greens midway through the British Open, according to Joburg Open champion Richard Sterne. The British Open organisers said on Saturday their decision to water the putting surfaces meant they were less firm and that was enough to satisfy South African Sterne who fired a third-round 68 that he felt could have turned into a much lower score. "I found it a lot better today," the 31-year-old told reporters after finishing on five-over 218. ...
